   ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2007

A Pikes Peak Community Tennis Association priority for 2007 was to facilitate the covering of two courts at Memorial Tennis Center. PPCTA is working with the City of Colorado Springs on this project. The cost of the project is $670,000. The city of Colorado Springs earmarked $310,000 for the project and PPCTA is working to raise the additional $360,000. Click here to view the power point presentation made to the Parks and Recreation Board. You must have Microsoft Power Point to view this presentation. In 2007 PPCTA provided the following tennis programs for the disadvantaged or physically disabled in Colorado Springs:

    • The Hillside Community Center Program serves disadvantaged youths, 6-16 years of age, from different ethnic backgrounds and from low-income areas of Colorado Springs. PPCTA provided tennis instruction, courts, racquets, and balls. Scholarships were available for participants wishing to continue with tennis instruction.
    • PPCTA provided for low-income at-risk youth at the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region tennis instruction, racquets, and balls.  Scholarships were available for participants wishing to continue with tennis instruction.
    • In 2007 PPCTA awarded $312.00 to students indicating a need.

In addition to the above programs PPCTA provided all USA tennis programs for Colorado Springs tennis players at Memorial Tennis Center to include lessons, camps, clinics, leagues and tournaments.

TennisFest was presented as PPCTA’s designer event for the first time in 2007. This tournament is a fundraiser for youth tennis programs in Colorado Springs.  PPCTA Committee Chair Tony Matthews did an excellent job and the event raised $5,000 for youth programs in 2008. PPCTA is excited to announce that Kellie and Brian Ford  are the new city tennis directors at Memorial Tennis Center. For more information go to www.memorialparktennis.com or e-mail at kellie@memorialparktennis.park, phone 719.385-6023.

PPCTA is equally as excited to annouce that Tony Matthews is the new PPCTA Executive Director. Tony can be contacted at PPCTA@aol.com.

Our membership in 2007 more than doubled from 2006.  This is significant as foundations want to see that our efforts are supported by our community when we ask for grant funding from their organizations. It has also been significant to city planners as we seek to cover courts at Memorial Tennis Center.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT MauriceMarks06

WHY TENNIS?

Tennis combines fitness and fun, all at the same time. Tennis will reduce your stress and invigorate you. Tennis is on of the best ways to socialize and connect with people.  Tennis is one of the best family activities.  Life long freinds are found playing tennis.  11.3 million adults played tennis last year.

Tennis ranks in the top five workouts for most calories burned per workout.  Want to keep your cardiovascular system and heart healthy? Play tennis. Tennis is a life long sport for any age. You are never too old or young!

A heartfelt thank you to all our contributors past and present!  You are responsible for allowing us to provide health and fitness tennis programs for the low-income at-risk youth in Colorado Springs.

A special note of thanks to Donna O’Steen-Mixon for her excellent leadership.  Donna received the Bud Robineau award in recognition for outstanding contributions to the tennis community. Congratulations, Donna!!

We at PPCTA remained committed to providing the best tennis experience possible!

Thank you!

Maurice Marks.
